April is the month that divides opinion on Phuket. Half the travellers you'll meet describe it as one of the best months of the year β€” sunny, hot, perfect for the beach, and home to Songkran, the most extraordinary festival in Thailand. The other half will tell you it's genuinely too hot, the beaches become unbearable by midday, and Songkran means three days of being soaked by complete strangers.

Both groups are right, which is why April is a month that rewards planning. If you know what you're getting into β€” and you plan around the heat and the festival β€” it can be one of the most memorable months to visit Phuket. If you show up in mid-April expecting January's weather and no crowds, you'll have a very different experience.

There's a lot to understand about April in Phuket: the exact timing of Songkran, how the heat actually feels, how prices and crowds change through the month, and what activities work best in these conditions. This guide gives you all of it, honestly, from people who've spent real time here in April. Everything below is based on actually being in Phuket during the month, not on a weather chart.

April in Phuket β€” the hottest month of the year. Beautiful in the morning, brutal by midday, magical in the evening.

The Short Answer β€” Is April a Good Time for Phuket?

It depends on which part of April and what you want from your trip. The first two weeks are excellent β€” hot but manageable, sunny, calm seas, and prices lower than January or February. From April 13, Songkran transforms everything β€” for three days, Phuket becomes a giant water fight, and if you're not prepared for it, you'll be caught out.

The last two weeks of April see the heat peak, humidity climb, and the first pre-monsoon showers begin. It's still a good time to visit if you're beach-focused and don't mind the heat, but it's less comfortable than any other month.

Phuket Weather in April β€” The Real Numbers

April is the hottest month of the year in Phuket. Here's what the numbers actually feel like.

Temperature: Daytime averages 32–35Β°C (90–95Β°F), with occasional days hitting 36–37Β°C (97–99Β°F). This is genuinely hot β€” hotter than Bangkok, hotter than any other month in Phuket. Nights cool to 26–28Β°C (79–82Β°F), which is still warm enough to require air conditioning.

Rainfall: April is a transition month. The first half is usually dry; the second half sees occasional pre-monsoon showers, particularly in the last week. Average rainfall is 120–150mm for the month, mostly concentrated in late April. Songkran itself is often held during a dry stretch β€” ironic given that the entire festival involves water.

Sunshine: Around 7–8 hours per day. The sun is intense β€” much stronger than in the cooler months. This is the month when sunscreen and shade become genuinely important.

Sea temperature: 30Β°C (86Β°F) β€” the warmest sea temperature of the year. It's genuinely bath-like. Some visitors find it too warm for a refreshing swim, though it's perfect for long hours in the water.

Wind: Generally light. Calm conditions in the first half, slightly breezier in the last week as the monsoon starts to build.

Water clarity: Excellent in the first half of April. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is very good until about April 20, when it starts to degrade as the seas pick up.

Songkran β€” Thailand's New Year Water Festival

Songkran festival water fight in Thailand with people celebrating on the street

Songkran β€” three days of water fights, family celebrations and Buddhist rituals marking Thai New Year.

Songkran is the single biggest event of the year in Thailand, and it dominates the April calendar. If you're visiting Phuket in mid-April, it's impossible to ignore β€” and depending on your temperament, it will either be one of the best experiences of your trip or a reason to leave town for three days.

When Is Songkran?

Officially Songkran runs from April 13 to April 15 every year. In practice, the celebrations often start early in Phuket (from April 12) and continue through April 16 in some areas. In Patong specifically, the water fights are at their peak on April 13 and 14, with diminishing intensity by April 15.

What Actually Happens During Songkran?

The original Songkran tradition is gentle β€” pouring a small amount of scented water over Buddha statues and family members as a blessing for the new year. In modern Thailand, particularly in tourist areas like Patong, it has evolved into a full-scale water fight.

On Songkran days, the streets of Patong are packed with locals and tourists armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses. Traffic grinds to a halt. Everyone is a target. Getting from your hotel to a restaurant β€” a walk that normally takes five minutes β€” can take twenty minutes and leave you completely soaked.

It's chaotic, loud, joyful, and utterly unlike anything else in the world. For many visitors, it's the highlight of their trip. For others, it's overwhelming after about two hours.

Who Should Plan Around Songkran

If you're keen to experience Songkran, come to Phuket specifically for it. Book accommodation months in advance (hotels sell out by January for Songkran week) and prepare for three days of being wet.

If you'd rather avoid Songkran, either come in the first ten days of April (April 1–10) or the last ten days (April 16–30). Both windows are outside the main festival and quieter.

Songkran Safety

A few things worth knowing to stay safe and avoid problems.

Keep electronics in a waterproof bag. Bring a proper dry bag for your phone, wallet and anything else you don't want to be soaked. Standard plastic bags aren't enough.

Don't drive a scooter during Songkran. Roads are slippery, other riders are distracted, and the risk of accidents is much higher than usual. Take a tuk-tuk or Grab (which works, though slower during the festival).

Don't throw water at monks, elderly people or anyone clearly not participating. This is genuinely rude and can cause problems.

Watch out for ice water. Some locals use ice water, which can be genuinely shocking. It's all part of the game, but be prepared.

Protect your eyes. Sunglasses help, but if you wear contact lenses, consider switching to glasses for Songkran β€” dirty water in the eyes with contacts is a real risk.

Don't carry anything expensive. Leave jewellery, watches, and anything valuable at your hotel.

Do Hotels Provide Cover During Songkran?

No. The water fights happen on the streets, in front of bars, and at every major intersection. Hotel entrances are not safe zones. If you need to leave your hotel during Songkran, you will get wet.

Some hotels offer "Songkran shuttles" to move guests around, but these aren't universal. Most guests simply accept that they'll be wet for the duration.

How Crowded Is Phuket in April?

April's crowd levels are highly variable depending on when you're visiting. Outside Songkran, it's moderate. During Songkran, it's the busiest week of the year.

April 1–12 β€” Moderate Crowds

The first two weeks of April are moderately busy β€” comparable to March but easing slightly as the heat builds. Beaches are manageable, restaurants don't need reservations, and tours are easy to book.

April 13–16 β€” Songkran Chaos

Songkran week is the single busiest period of the year in Phuket. Patong is packed, hotels are at full capacity, restaurants need reservations, and the streets are chaotic. If you're not prepared, this can be overwhelming.

April 17–30 β€” Quiet and Hot

After Songkran, crowds thin out significantly. The heat peaks and many tourists avoid the last two weeks. For travellers who don't mind the heat, this is actually a lovely time β€” quiet, cheap, and with beautiful weather in the mornings and evenings.

Phuket Prices in April β€” What Things Actually Cost

April pricing is moderate overall, but Songkran week sees a huge spike. Here are realistic prices.

Accommodation

Budget hotels: $35–60 per night outside Songkran, $80–120 during Songkran.

Mid-range hotels: $80–150 per night outside Songkran, $200–350 during Songkran.

Luxury resorts: $250–500 per night outside Songkran, $600–1,200 during Songkran.

The Songkran price spike is significant β€” some hotels double or triple their standard rates for April 13–15. Book months in advance if you're specifically targeting Songkran.

Food

Food prices at markets, street stalls, and local restaurants are the same year-round. At Malin Plaza Phuket, dishes remain 80–150 THB ($2–4). See our cheap food guide for what to eat on a budget.

Restaurant dining costs the same in April as any other month. During Songkran, some restaurants close or operate on limited hours, so plan around it.

Transport

Grab prices are fixed year-round, though surge pricing applies during Songkran due to high demand. Tuk-tuk drivers also raise prices during Songkran week. Walking is often faster than any vehicle during the festival.

Activities

Most tours operate as usual during April, though some operate on reduced schedules during Songkran. Prices are similar to March. Book ahead if you have specific dates in mind.

What to Do in Phuket in April

April's heat changes what works and what doesn't. Here's how to make the most of the month.

Beach Days (Early Morning and Late Afternoon)

Forget midday at the beach β€” between 11 AM and 3 PM the sand is scorching and the sun is punishing. Instead, aim for 7–10 AM and 4–6 PM. Early morning is genuinely beautiful in April, and the beach is at its most pleasant.

Patong Beach in April is manageable outside Songkran. For quieter options, head to Kata (guide), Nai Harn (guide), or Kamala (guide).

Phi Phi Islands Day Trip

April remains a good month for the Phi Phi day trip, especially in the first half. The sea is calm, water clarity is excellent, and the speedboat crossing is comfortable. See our Phi Phi Islands day trip guide.

Coral Island Half-Day Trip

Coral Island works well in April β€” calm seas, clear water, and excellent snorkelling. See our Coral Island day trip guide.

Songkran Celebrations

If you're in Phuket April 13–15, this is the main event. Join the water fights in Patong, or visit one of the more traditional celebrations at a temple to see the original blessing rituals.

Thai Cooking Class

Ideal for April. Indoor activity that works regardless of the heat. See our Phuket cooking class guide.

Malin Plaza Night Market

Open every evening, and April evenings are lovely. The market is at its most pleasant once the sun has set and the temperature drops. See our Malin Plaza food guide.

Thai Massage

Excellent activity for the hot afternoons. A one-hour Thai massage costs 250–400 THB ($7–12) at reputable shops. Perfect for cooling down during the peak heat.

Phuket Old Town

Best visited in the early morning or evening. The Sino-Portuguese architecture, cafΓ©s, and Sunday Walking Street Market are all excellent. During the day, take refuge in air-conditioned shops.

Elephant Sanctuary

Excellent in April β€” but book a morning visit, as the afternoon heat is hard on both visitors and elephants. See our Ethical Elephant Sanctuary Phuket guide.

Sunset at Karon Viewpoint

April sunsets are often spectacular, with dramatic clouds starting to build. Karon Viewpoint, 15 minutes from Patong, offers a panorama of three bays. See our Things to Do in Patong guide.

What NOT to Do in Phuket in April

Common mistakes visitors make during this hot and festival-heavy month.

Don't visit during Songkran if you don't want to get wet. There's no way to avoid the water fights in Patong during April 13–15. If you don't want to participate, either leave town or come a different week.

Don't underestimate the heat. Midday sun in April is genuinely dangerous. Heatstroke and sunburn are real risks. Drink water constantly, seek shade, and schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon.

Don't rent a scooter during Songkran. Roads are wet, riders are distracted, and the accident risk is much higher. Take a tuk-tuk or Grab instead.

Don't carry electronics without a dry bag. If you're in Patong during Songkran, your phone will get soaked without protection. Bring a proper waterproof bag.

Don't book a hotel at the last minute during Songkran. Songkran accommodations sell out by January. If you're coming for the festival, book early.

Don't swim outside flagged zones. Even in April, when the sea looks calm, occasional swell and rip currents can develop as the monsoon builds. Take the warnings seriously. See our Patong Beach safety guide.

Don't forget travel insurance. Especially if you're doing Songkran (where accidents are more common) or water activities. See our Phuket Travel Insurance guide.

What to Pack for Phuket in April

Packing for April requires thinking about heat and, if you're visiting during Songkran, water protection.

Light, breathable clothing: Cotton, linen, quick-dry fabrics. Bring more T-shirts than you think you'll need β€” you'll change clothes more often than usual.

Swimwear: Bring at least two sets. You'll swim more in April than in most months.

High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen: Essential. Bring more than you think you need. Reapply every two hours.

Sunglasses and hat: The April sun is intense even in early morning. A wide-brimmed hat is worth bringing.

Dry bag (essential for Songkran): A proper waterproof bag for phone, wallet and valuables. Regular plastic bags aren't enough for Songkran.

Waterproof phone case: If you're doing Songkran, or any water activities.

Comfortable walking shoes and sandals: Phuket's streets are uneven, and April heat makes comfort important.

Rehydration sachets: Electrolyte sachets help replenish after heat exposure and Songkran.

What NOT to bring: Don't bring heavy jackets, jeans, or formal clothing. Don't bring expensive jewellery or watches. Don't bring a large umbrella β€” it's useless in Songkran and awkward in heat.

April vs Other Months β€” Where It Ranks

How does April compare to the rest of the year?

April vs January: January has the best weather. April is hotter and includes Songkran. January is better for pure beach weather; April is better for the festival experience and lower non-Songkran prices.

April vs March: March has better weather and lower prices. April is hotter but has Songkran. Both are excellent β€” choose March for pure weather, April for the festival.

April vs May: May is cooler but starts the monsoon. April is hotter but has more reliable weather outside Songkran week. Both offer good value.

April vs November: November has much better weather and similar prices. November is our top recommendation, but April is a strong choice for anyone specifically interested in Songkran.

For a full seasonal breakdown, see our Best Time to Visit Phuket guide.

Where to Stay in Phuket in April

April pricing is moderate outside Songkran week, and surprisingly high during it. If you're not visiting for the festival, you can get excellent value in the last two weeks of April.

A hotel near Malin Plaza puts you at the centre of Patong's food scene and within walking distance of the beach. For a breakdown of Patong hotels across every budget, see our Best Hotels Near Malin Plaza guide. For budget travellers, our Cheap Hotels in Patong Under $30 guide covers the best value options.

For travellers wanting a quieter area, consider Kata (guide) or Nai Harn (guide). Both are quieter than Patong and especially pleasant in April.

To compare April availability across hotels, use the calendar view on Agoda or Trip.com. For Songkran week, book 2–3 months in advance. For the rest of April, 3–4 weeks ahead is usually sufficient.

🌑️ April insider tips: Plan around the heat β€” early mornings and evenings are your best windows. If you're visiting for Songkran, book accommodation months in advance and pack a proper dry bag. If you want to avoid Songkran, come April 1–10 or April 16–30. Take advantage of the mid-month price drops after Songkran β€” the last two weeks of April are quiet and cheap. And don't underestimate the sun β€” an April sunburn is worse than any other month.

Final Verdict β€” Should You Visit Phuket in April?

Yes, with the right expectations. April is the hottest month of the year, which changes the rhythm of a Phuket holiday β€” but it's also a great month for the beach, for evening activities, and for experiencing Thai culture at its most vibrant during Songkran.

If you want reliable, comfortable weather, come in November or March instead. If you want to experience Songkran β€” genuinely one of the great festivals of the world β€” April is the month to come. And if you just want to spend the last two weeks of April relaxing on a warm beach at low prices, that works too.
