Patong has a strange reputation when it comes to budget hotels. Some travellers assume anything under $30 a night must be a cockroach-infested horror show. Others assume all budget places are basically the same and just book the cheapest option on Agoda without reading further.
Neither assumption is right. The truth is that Patong has genuinely excellent budget hotels — clean, well-run, well-located, with working air-con and decent beds — for $22 to $30 a night. It also has some absolute dumps at the same prices. The difference between them has very little to do with money and almost everything to do with choosing carefully.
This guide is built around one goal: telling you exactly which budget hotels in Patong are worth your money, and which to skip. Everything below is based on our own stays and the accumulated experience of staying in central Patong many times over several years.
Budget hotels in Patong can be genuinely good — clean rooms, working air-con, and often a small pool.
What $30 a Night Actually Gets You in Patong
Before naming specific hotels, it's worth setting realistic expectations. Here's what the $22–30 range typically buys you in Patong in 2025.
You will get: A private room with air conditioning. A private bathroom with hot shower. Fresh bedding. Wi-Fi that works, usually. A small fridge. Basic security (in-room safe or reception safe). Often a small pool.
You probably won't get: A view. A balcony (some budget rooms have one, most don't). A bathtub. Breakfast included. Room service. A gym. Modern design.
You should not tolerate: Cockroaches or ants. Broken air-con. Stained bedding. Loud noise from a bar below your window. A location that requires a taxi every time you go anywhere.
The single biggest quality variable at this price point is location. A $25 room on a quiet inland street near Malin Plaza is worth far more than a $25 room directly above a Bangla Road bar. Choose location first, then room quality.
The Best Cheap Hotels in Patong Under $30
1. Ibis Phuket Patong — Best Overall Budget Pick
If we had to recommend exactly one budget hotel in Patong to every reader, it would be this one. The Ibis is a proper branded hotel — part of the global Accor group — and it delivers exactly what you'd expect: clean, compact, well-maintained rooms, reliable air conditioning, a small pool, and a location that's genuinely hard to beat.
It sits on Prachanukhro Road, roughly a 90-second walk from Malin Plaza and about a 4-minute walk from Patong Beach. You can be eating Pad Thai at the market within two minutes of leaving your room. That convenience is worth a lot.
Price range: $30–38 in low season, $45–65 in high season. Occasionally drops below $30 during June–September, especially for weekday stays booked a few weeks in advance.
Why it works: Brand standards. Even budget hotels in the Accor group maintain consistent cleanliness and service. You know what you're getting.
Downsides: Rooms are small. Breakfast costs extra (200 THB). Pool is small.
Best for: Solo travellers, budget couples, anyone prioritising location over space.
2. The Expat Hotel Patong — Best Budget Location
A well-established budget hotel on Rat-U-Thit Road, about a 6-minute walk from both Patong Beach and Malin Plaza. Rooms are basic but clean, and the hotel has a surprisingly good small pool and a pleasant garden courtyard that most guests don't expect at this price point.
The building is older but well-maintained. The staff are friendly and long-serving, which is always a good sign in the budget category. Rooms come with air-con, fridge, safe and hot shower.
Price range: $25–32 low season, $38–50 high season.
Why it works: Location — you can walk to everything in central Patong without ever needing a taxi.
Downsides: Some rooms face the street and pick up noise. Ask for an inside-facing room.
Best for: Budget couples, friends travelling together, anyone planning to walk everywhere.
3. Sleep With Me Hotel — Best Budget Design Hotel
Despite the slightly awkward name, this is genuinely one of the best-value budget hotels in central Patong. It's a modern, well-designed property on a quiet side street about 7 minutes' walk from Malin Plaza. Rooms are compact but cleverly laid out, with good lighting, comfortable beds and reliable Wi-Fi.
The hotel has a small rooftop pool with views over Patong — a genuine luxury at this price point. The common areas are nicely decorated and the staff are helpful with booking tours and taxis.
Price range: $28–35 low season, $42–60 high season.
Why it works: Feels more expensive than it is. Genuinely stylish rooms and a rooftop pool.
Downsides: Not all rooms have windows. Ask for a window room when booking.
Best for: Couples, design-conscious travellers on a budget.
4. Baan Andaman Bed & Breakfast — Best Budget B&B
A small family-run guesthouse on a quiet street near Jungceylon Mall. About a 10-minute walk from Malin Plaza and 8 minutes from Patong Beach. Rooms are simple but pleasant, and the owners live on-site and genuinely care about the property.
Breakfast is included — a proper Thai or Western option, not just toast — which makes the effective nightly rate even better. There's a small garden and a comfortable common area.
Price range: $22–28 low season, $32–45 high season.
Why it works: The owner-operators. Small family-run places in Patong are often better-run than mid-range hotels because the owners have real skin in the game.
Downsides: No pool. Very limited room service.
Best for: Solo travellers, budget couples, anyone who prefers a homely atmosphere over a corporate hotel.
5. Lub d Phuket Patong — Best Budget Hostel (Private Rooms Available)
Technically a hostel, but Lub d also offers private double rooms at prices that beat most budget hotels in Patong. The property is modern, clean and well-designed, with a great pool, a bar and a sociable atmosphere that solo travellers love.
If you're travelling alone, the dorm beds here start around $12–15 per night, which is the best value in Patong for solo travellers. Private rooms are $28–40 depending on season.
Price range: Dorms $12–18, private doubles $28–40.
Why it works: Modern facilities, great atmosphere, and the option to switch between dorm and private rooms depending on budget.
Downsides: Rooms are small. Hostel atmosphere isn't for everyone.
Best for: Solo travellers, young couples, anyone who wants to meet other travellers.
Areas of Patong — Which Is Best for Budget Hotels?
Location matters more than anything else at the $25 price point. Here's how the main areas compare.
Around Prachanukhro Road (near Malin Plaza). Our top pick for budget travellers. This is where the best combination of price, quiet and convenience exists. You're walking distance from both Patong Beach and the market, but away from the noisiest parts of Patong. Hotels here include the Ibis and Sleep With Me.
Around Rat-U-Thit Road. Central and convenient but noisier. Good for people who want to be in the middle of things. The Expat Hotel is a solid option here.
Northern Patong (toward Kalim). Quieter and often cheaper, but a longer walk to the beach and Malin Plaza. Only worth it if you have a scooter or don't mind a 20-minute walk.
Southern Patong (toward Karon). Similar to northern Patong — quieter, cheaper, further from the action.
Directly above Bangla Road. Avoid unless you specifically want to be at the centre of the nightlife. Noise runs until 3 AM, and even earplugs won't fully solve it.
What to Check Before Booking Any Budget Hotel in Patong
A few things we always check on Agoda before booking a budget hotel in Patong. These fifteen seconds of reading can save you a week of regret.
Read the most recent reviews, not the overall score. A hotel with a 7.8 overall score but the last five reviews all mentioning "air-con broken" is a worse bet than a hotel with 7.5 that has consistent recent positive feedback. Filter reviews by most recent.
Check what "breakfast included" actually means. Some budget hotels include a full buffet. Others offer a single slice of white bread and jam. Read the reviews to find out which.
Look at the room's position in the building. Street-facing rooms in Patong are much noisier than interior rooms. When booking, request a quiet or inside-facing room. Even if you don't get it, asking doesn't hurt.
Check the walking distance to Malin Plaza. Many hotels advertise "5 minutes from Patong Beach" without clarifying which end. Cross-check on Google Maps before booking — the difference between a 5-minute walk and a 20-minute walk is significant in Phuket's heat.
Search recent photos on Google Maps. Hotel listing photos can be several years old. Recent traveller photos on Google Maps show what a place actually looks like right now.
When to Book for the Best Prices
Patong hotel prices fluctuate enormously by season. The same room at the same hotel can cost $28 in June and $65 in January.
Low season (June–September): Best prices of the year. Some budget hotels drop below $25. The trade-off is that it rains a lot. But if you're comfortable with afternoon showers, this is when budget travellers should visit.
Shoulder season (May, October–early November): Our personal favourite. Prices are 30–40% lower than peak, weather is still generally good, and the town is less crowded.
High season (November–February): Peak prices. Budget hotels often sell out weeks in advance. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for the best combination of price and availability.
Peak Christmas/New Year: Avoid if you're on a tight budget. Even the cheapest Patong hotels double or triple their rates.
💡 Booking tip: Create a free account on both Agoda and Trip.com before you start comparing. Account holders unlock member-only rates that are typically 10–15% cheaper than standard prices — often the difference between $35 and $28.
Budget Hotels vs Hostels — Which Should You Choose?
At the $25 price point, you're typically choosing between two things: a private room in a budget hotel, or a dorm bed in a hostel. Here's how they compare.
Choose a budget hotel if: You want privacy, you're travelling as a couple, you value being able to walk around your room freely, or you're sensitive to noise from other guests.
Choose a hostel if: You're travelling solo and want to meet people, you don't mind sharing a room, or you want access to a shared kitchen and common areas.
Hybrid option: Places like Lub d offer both dorm beds and private rooms in the same property. This gives you the best of both — the price of a dorm if you want to save, the privacy of a private room if you want to splurge for a night.
What to Bring to a Budget Hotel in Patong
A few small things that make budget-hotel stays in Patong considerably more pleasant.
Earplugs. Patong is noisy at night — motorbikes, street traffic, air-con units, and sometimes bars. Good earplugs are worth their weight in gold.
A universal plug adapter. Thai power sockets are type A and B (same as US). If you're from the UK, Australia or Europe, you'll need an adapter.
Your own toiletries. Budget hotels often provide only soap and shampoo. Bring your own toothpaste, toothbrush and any other essentials.
A quick-dry towel if you're staying somewhere extremely cheap. Some very cheap places provide towels that are past their prime. Bringing your own microfibre towel solves this entirely.
A small padlock. Useful if you want to use the hotel's luggage storage or if your room doesn't have a safe.
The One Rule That Saves You Every Time
If you remember only one thing from this guide, make it this: the single most important variable in a Patong budget hotel is location.
A $28 hotel near Malin Plaza with basic rooms is a far better choice than a $20 hotel on the northern end of Patong that requires a taxi every time you want to eat or go to the beach. The taxi costs alone will eat the price difference within two days. And the convenience of walking everywhere adds a huge amount to the enjoyment of your trip.
This is one of the reasons we focus so much of our own hotel coverage on properties within walking distance of Malin Plaza. Good budget hotels near the market make everything about Patong easier.
