The first time we drove from Patong to Karon, the change was almost disorienting. Ten minutes earlier we'd been dodging tuk-tuks on a street that felt like a small city, and then suddenly we were on a wide open beach road with palm trees, empty pavement, and the sound of the sea instead of bars. Same island, same hour. Completely different holiday.
That's the thing about Karon and Patong β they're only 6 kilometres apart, but they attract different travellers, offer different experiences, and come with different price tags. Neither is better. They're just different. And picking the right one for your trip makes a bigger difference to how much you enjoy Phuket than almost any other decision you'll make.
This guide compares the two honestly β atmosphere, beaches, food, prices, safety, and who each one suits β so you can stop reading comparison articles that tell you "both are great!" and actually make a decision.
Phuket has both of these. The question is which one fits the holiday you actually want.
The Short Answer
If you only have time for one paragraph, here it is:
Choose Patong if you want nightlife, more restaurant choice, easy access to markets and shopping, the widest range of hotels, and a town where everything is within walking distance. It's the busiest, loudest, most commercial part of Phuket β which is exactly why millions of people love it.
Choose Karon if you want a proper beach holiday with a quieter atmosphere, cleaner water, more space on the sand, and a slower pace. It's calmer, more family-friendly, and noticeably cheaper for the equivalent quality of accommodation.

Location and How They Compare
Patong and Karon are neighbours, but they're on different stretches of Phuket's west coast.
Patong sits on the central-west coast, roughly 15 km southwest of Phuket Town. It's the most developed beach town on the island and functions as Phuket's tourism hub. From the airport, Patong is about 35 km or 45β60 minutes by car.
Karon is further south, about 6 km from Patong along the coast road. It's smaller, more residential in feel, and less commercially developed. From the airport, Karon is 40 km or 55β70 minutes by car.
The two are close enough that many travellers base in one and visit the other. A Grab between them costs 120β200 THB ($3β6) and takes 15β20 minutes. A tuk-tuk will quote you 300β500 THB β always negotiate before getting in. For detailed transport options, see our Patong location and transport guide.
The Beaches Themselves
Karon Beach is wider and longer than Patong β 4km of sand compared to Patong's 3km.
Patong Beach
Patong Beach is 3 kilometres of pale sand on a west-facing crescent. The sand is slightly coarser than Karon's, and the water is often less clear because of the sheer volume of activity β jet skis, boats, and thousands of bathers. But the beach itself is fine, and the convenience factor is unbeatable.
The beach is busiest in the central section, directly in front of the main beach road. The northern end (near the Amari hotel) is quieter and cleaner, and worth the 10-minute walk if you want a calmer spot. The southern end backs onto rocks and leads toward Karon.
Facilities are extensive: beach chair rentals (100β200 THB per day), umbrellas, massage, food and drink vendors, water sports operations, and 7-Eleven stores behind the beach. Every type of beach vendor you can imagine is here, walking the sand all day.
For more on Patong Beach specifically, including the safety advice that actually matters, see our Patong Beach complete guide.
Karon Beach
Karon Beach is nearly 4 kilometres of sand, making it the longest beach in Phuket. The sand here is finer and softer than Patong's β the kind that squeaks underfoot β and the beach is noticeably wider. Even in peak season, you can walk 200 metres along the water's edge and find a quiet stretch of sand.
The water is generally cleaner than Patong's, though Karon can have stronger waves and undertows in the monsoon season. The slope into the water is slightly steeper than at Patong, which makes it better for stronger swimmers and less ideal for toddlers.
Facilities at Karon are fewer but still adequate. Beach chairs (100β200 THB), umbrellas, some food and drink stalls, and a handful of massage operations. The beach is backed by a mix of small hotels, restaurants, and the main Karon road with its shops and cafΓ©s.

Atmosphere and Crowds
The atmosphere is where the two beaches diverge most.
Patong Atmosphere
Patong is loud, busy and relentlessly commercial. Traffic noise, tuk-tuks, street vendors, restaurant touts, massage shop staff, and hotel concierges β the town hums all day and into the night. Bangla Road becomes pedestrian-only after 6 PM and fills with bars, nightclubs, live music and the associated chaos until 3 or 4 AM.
This is what makes Patong the most popular tourist destination in Phuket. It's not relaxing, but it's alive. If you want a holiday where everything is happening around you, this is the place.
For more on what to do in Patong, see our guide to things to do in Patong.
Karon Atmosphere
Karon is a proper beach town, not a party town. The main road has restaurants, small hotels, a few bars, and shops, but the pace is slower and the noise level is much lower. Most people you see are families, couples, and long-stay visitors who come here because it's quieter than Patong.
Evening entertainment in Karon is limited to restaurants, a handful of bars, and the occasional Muay Thai or live music venue. There's no Bangla Road equivalent. If you want nightlife, you either travel to Patong or you accept that Karon evenings are for dinner and sleep.
What Karon does have: space, quiet mornings, empty beaches at sunrise and sunset, and a general feeling that you're on holiday rather than in a theme park.
Accommodation β Prices and Choice
Patong Hotels
Patong has the widest range of accommodation in Phuket. You'll find everything from $12 hostel beds to $800 luxury resorts, with genuinely good options at every price point. The problem isn't choice, it's noise and location β a hotel on the beach road is convenient but loud, and a hotel 10 minutes back is quiet but requires transport to get anywhere.
Typical prices for hotels near Patong Beach:
Budget ($25β45/night): Basic rooms, often in guesthouses or mid-tier hotels. Our guide to cheap hotels in Patong under $30 covers the best options.
Mid-range ($50β120/night): Comfortable hotels with pools, good locations, breakfast included.
Luxury ($150+/night): Full-service resorts on the beach road or with beach access.
For a full breakdown, see our guide to the best hotels near Malin Plaza, which covers all budgets.
Karon Hotels
Karon has fewer hotels but noticeably better value for equivalent quality. A mid-range hotel in Karon at $70/night is often a nicer property than a $70 hotel in Patong, because the land is cheaper and the demand pressure is lower.
Typical prices for hotels in Karon:
Budget ($20β40/night): Small guesthouses and basic hotels, often within a few minutes' walk of the beach.
Mid-range ($45β100/night): Comfortable hotels with pools, often with better beach proximity than Patong equivalents.
Luxury ($150+/night): Karon has fewer luxury options than Patong, but those that exist (like The Boathouse) are excellent.
For families specifically, Karon's mid-range hotels offer some of the best value in Phuket.
Food and Dining
Patong Food
Patong has the widest food choice in Phuket, from beachfront restaurants to street stalls to local markets. The best value is at Malin Plaza Phuket, where full meals cost 80β150 THB ($2β4). Our Malin Plaza food guide covers what to order, and our cheap food in Patong guide covers eating well for under $5.
Beachfront restaurants in Patong are significantly overpriced β a Pad Thai that costs 80 THB at Malin Plaza costs 350 THB on the beach road for the same (or worse) quality. Learn to walk one block inland and your food budget halves.
For specific dishes, see our guides to the best Pad Thai in Patong, the best grilled seafood in Patong, and the best mango sticky rice in Phuket.
Karon Food
Karon has a good selection of restaurants but nothing like Patong's range. Most are on or just off the main Karon road, and the mix skews toward Thai food, seafood, and mid-range international restaurants. Prices are slightly lower than Patong's beachfront but comparable to Malin Plaza for local dishes.
The absence of a proper night market is a genuine drawback. If you love the market food scene in Patong, Karon will feel limited. There are small local stalls and a few evening food carts, but nothing on the scale of Malin Plaza.
If food is a priority for your trip, this is one of the strongest arguments for choosing Patong over Karon.
Safety and Swimming
Both beaches have similar safety profiles in high season (NovemberβApril) and similar risks in monsoon season (MayβOctober).
High season: Both are generally safe for swimming within flagged zones. Karon has slightly stronger waves and a steeper slope into the water, so weak swimmers should be more careful. Patong has lifeguards and clearly marked zones.
Monsoon season: Both beaches have strong rip currents and red flags are common. Karon is often slightly more dangerous than Patong because of its exposure and the way the waves break. Never swim outside flagged zones at either beach. Tourists drown at both every year, almost always because they ignored warnings.
For detailed safety advice on Patong Beach specifically, see the safety section of our Patong Beach guide.
Street safety: Both are safe. Patong has more nightlife-related petty crime and touts, but nothing serious. Karon is quieter, and the risk of any kind of theft is lower. Standard precautions apply at both.
Family Suitability
This is where Karon clearly wins.
Karon: Quiet atmosphere, wide beaches with space for kids to run, calmer evenings, less traffic, and a stronger family-hotel scene. Several Karon resorts have dedicated kids' clubs and family pools. The beach itself is safer for children in high season, though the steeper slope into the water requires closer supervision.
Patong: Doable for families but not ideal. The beach is busier and the central section isn't great for young children. Bangla Road is not appropriate for kids after 9 PM. The upside is that Patong has more activities that families can do together β the night market, cooking classes, Muay Thai, and easier access to day trips.
For most families with young children, we'd recommend Karon as the base and Patong for a day visit. For families with older teenagers who want both beach and nightlife, Patong works well.
Nightlife
Patong wins this one by an enormous margin.
Patong: Bangla Road, dozens of bars, live music venues, nightclubs, late-night restaurants, and everything associated with Patong's party reputation. Bars are open until 2 AM (officially) and often later. There's something to do every night, every style, every budget.
Karon: A handful of restaurants and bars that stay open until 11 PM, occasionally later. No nightclubs. No live music scene to speak of. The town quiets down significantly after 10 PM.
If nightlife matters to you β even just for an evening or two β stay in Patong. If you want quiet evenings, Karon is a much better choice.
For more on what's actually worth doing in Patong at night, see our guide to things to do in Patong.
Cost of a Holiday β Direct Comparison
Karon is generally cheaper than Patong for equivalent quality β but the differences vary by category.
The most significant difference is accommodation β Karon hotels are 10β20% cheaper than Patong equivalents for the same quality. Food and activities are broadly similar.
Who Should Choose Patong?
Patong is the right choice if you tick most of these boxes.
You want nightlife β bars, clubs, live music, Bangla Road.
You want the widest range of restaurants, markets and shops within walking distance.
You don't mind noise and crowds, or even enjoy them.
You want a market food scene like Malin Plaza on your doorstep.
You want easy access to day trips with hotel pickup from Patong.
You're travelling solo or as a couple and want to meet people.
You're visiting for the first time and want the classic Phuket experience.
Who Should Choose Karon?
Karon is the right choice if you tick most of these boxes.
You want a beach holiday with a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.
You're travelling with young children or older family members.
You want a cleaner beach, softer sand, and more space.
You prefer to go to bed early and wake up early.
You want better value for equivalent accommodation quality.
You don't need nightlife and are happy with dinner and a quiet evening.
You're travelling as a couple for a romantic or restful trip.
What About Staying at Both?
This is often the best solution, especially for stays of a week or longer. Split your trip β a few nights in one, a few in the other β and get the best of both worlds.
Suggested split for a 7-night trip: 4 nights in Patong (access to markets, nightlife, day trips), 3 nights in Karon (beach relaxation).
Suggested split for a 10-night trip: 5 nights in Patong, 5 nights in Karon.
The logistics are easy β Grab between the two areas costs 120β200 THB ($3β6) and takes 15β20 minutes. Both areas have plenty of accommodation options.
π¨ Booking a split stay: Both Agoda and Trip.com let you book multiple properties with free cancellation, so you can plan a split stay and adjust if either doesn't work out. Member rates are typically 10β15% lower than standard pricing on both platforms.
What NOT to Do When Choosing Between Them
Common mistakes we see travellers make.
Don't book Patong just because it's the most famous. Fame doesn't equal suitability. If quiet is what you want, Patong will disappoint you regardless of how many people told you to stay there.
Don't book Karon expecting a quiet beach holiday in monsoon season. Karon's beach is unusable for swimming in many monsoon months. If you're visiting JuneβSeptember, don't choose Karon specifically for the beach.
Don't assume Karon is completely empty. In high season, Karon's main road gets busy too, and the beach has plenty of visitors. It's quieter than Patong, not empty.
Don't book a Patong hotel on the beach road if you're a light sleeper. The traffic noise starts at 7 AM and continues until midnight. Ask for a room away from the street, or stay one or two blocks back.
Don't plan to "just walk" between Karon and Patong. Six kilometres is a long, hot, exposed walk along a road with no pavement. Take a Grab (120β200 THB) instead.
Don't assume Karon has everything Patong does but quieter. Karon has a fraction of the restaurants, shops, nightlife and facilities. If you want a rich food scene, markets, and things to do, Karon will feel limited.
Where to Stay in Patong β Our Picks
If you've decided on Patong, the best area to base yourself is within walking distance of Malin Plaza. That puts you at the centre of the food scene, 3 minutes from the beach, and 5 minutes from Bangla Road.
Our guide to the best hotels near Malin Plaza covers every budget from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts. For a full breakdown of what to expect on different streets, see our guide to hotels near Bangla Road.
Where to Stay in Karon β Our Advice
In Karon, the best hotels are on the quieter inland side of the main road, within 5β10 minutes' walk of the beach. Look for properties with pools and reasonable breakfasts, which tend to be the best value in Phuket.
The most popular family area is around the northern end of Karon, where several mid-range resorts have dedicated kids' clubs and family pools. The southern end is quieter and more adult-focused, with better restaurants.
